One night at the call center

Book Review by Sakkriya t p

One night @ the call center is a beautiful novel of Mr.Chetan Bagath. In a single look novel seems to present some problems of the people working at the various call centers in India. Novelist and a character in the novel claim that it presents the problems and views of Indian youth. If we go through the incidents and characters in this novel we are fully satisfied with this claim. This novel becomes the narration of the anxiety of the Indian youth.
In India technology has advanced and we use latest facilities and equipments of the technology. But our social relations and family structure continue as orthodox and narrow minded. Dowry system, quarrels between the members, selfishness, and lack of personal freedom are continuing in our society like ‘foolish customs’. In a globalized world we are under pressure of some life style also. We face some mental problems in the competitive world. We are the prey of the consumerism. No individuality exists here. This brings some pressure in our daily life. At the same time we are the owners and slaves of our life. These notions and concepts are the main motives of this novel. The notable aspects and features of this novel are these concepts and thus the novel presents contemporary issues in Indian life.
This novel also bears some limitations. Its structure is like the structure of a Hindi masala cinema. This structure deliberately created in this novel. Suspense, exaggeration, super human incidence, and romance are the main ingredients of masala cinema. Some characters in this novel behave like the characters of Hindi cinema. Writer forms this structure to enhance the readability of the novel. This gives a simplicity that attracts the readers and creates new readers from young generation. But this structure keeps it distant from daily life.
